Necessity is the mother of invention!
How can you cook together and internationally when
- trips abroad are forbidden for Corona reasons,
- South Tyrolean schools are in distance learning,
- in La Mancha, Spanish students are not allowed to cook at their school.
- in Bavaria only half classes can be taught in present?
Ten students of the Academy for Nutrition and Supply Management at Klara-Oppenheimer-Schule cooked – after a Corona test – with their teacher Mrs Tauber and Rose Nkeng ntouk from Cameroon, the other students of the class were also connected online.

However, the event was not only about preparing food from Cameroon, but also about sustainability goals in nutrition.
Rose – our speaker from the World University Service (wus) for the project day – comes from Cameroon, but has lived in Bavaria since her Abitur, where she is currently working on her Master’s degree. She speaks French, English and German. This multilingualism makes communication very easy!
One of her passions is cooking. To make her culture known to others, she works with the wus.
Rose started her presentation with the question „How to cook in a sustainable way?“ in which she told us about Cameroon and its culture. She introduced us to two holidays, International Women’s Day, which takes place on 8 March every year, and the Youth Festival, which is always celebrated on 11 February in Cameroon. Rose also gave us a brief overview of the Cameroonian school system before we moved on to the main topic of „sustainability in food“. The following aspects were particularly important to Rose in this context:
No waste: waste is kept as low as possible, e.g. by processing the whole fish and not just the fillets.
- Reduction of meat consumption through attractive side dishes
- Use of staple foods: rice, maize and beans
- Use of regional herbs and spices

Following the presentation, the students present prepared typical dishes from Cameroon together with Rose. The menu consisted of a salad starter, fish and chicken with sweet potatoes and spicy beans for the main course and baked banana. Delicious!
